Why blood sugar becomes your business after 40
It rarely arrives with any drama. Usually it's a line on a routine health check, or a GP mentioning it in passing, or a parent who had to keep an eye on theirs.
Nothing is wrong, exactly. But it has gone from someone else's topic to one you'd like to stay on top of. So you do the sensible things: a walk after dinner, brown bread instead of white. And, at some point, a shake of cinnamon on the morning porridge, because you read somewhere that it was worth doing.
Where the porridge shake falls short
The cinnamon in most UK kitchens is cassia, a different and more bitter bark from true Ceylon. Cassia also carries far more coumarin, a compound the EFSA advises limiting. And nobody measures a shake. You have no idea how much went on, or how much of the active compounds came with it.
A daily supplement should be the opposite of a guess: the same measured amount of the same standardised extract, every day.
That's the whole idea of this bag. Two capsules a day, with both doses printed on the bag so you can check them, to support healthy blood sugar already within the normal range and everyday metabolic wellness.
The bark Sri Lanka has been shipping for centuries
Ceylon cinnamon is Cinnamomum verum, from Sri Lanka, the island once called Ceylon. Next to cassia it's paler and thinner, rolls into soft, layered quills and tastes milder and sweeter. For centuries it was one of the most prized spices in the world. Most of what's sold as cinnamon today isn't that bark at all.
Berberine is the bright yellow compound found in plants such as goldenseal, and it was in use in herbal traditions long before anyone isolated it in a lab.
Old doesn't mean proven, so we've kept the history short and put the research, with its caveats, just below. What you're getting in each daily dose:
- True Ceylon, Cinnamomum verum, not cassia
- Extract standardised to cinnamaldehyde and polyphenols, not ground bark of unknown strength
- Paired with 500mg of berberine HCl
The research behind the ingredients
Published findings on cinnamon and berberine specifically, and on blood sugar research generally. The type of study is noted under each figure. These are ingredient findings, not outcomes claimed for this product.
Average change in fasting blood glucose associated with cinnamon supplementation, across an umbrella review of meta-analyses.
Umbrella meta-analysis, interventional trials in T2D/PCOSBerberine is studied for activating AMPK, a pathway involved in glucose uptake distinct from insulin signalling.
Systematic review, glycaemic & insulin-related traitsSubgroup analyses suggest higher cinnamon doses tend to show a larger effect, which is part of why dose and standardisation matter.
Umbrella meta-analysis, cinnamon & metabolic diseaseThese are published findings on cinnamon and berberine as ingredients, and on metabolic markers generally. They are not outcomes we claim for this product, and this formula has not itself been clinically tested. This is a food supplement, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Why there are two ingredients in the bag, not one
Most cinnamon capsules stop at cinnamon. This one adds a second active that's studied for something different, so the two aren't doing the same job twice.
Ceylon cinnamon extract
Standardised to cinnamaldehyde and polyphenols, the compounds the cinnamon research focuses on. Standardised means each batch is made to carry them, rather than leaving it to the bark.
Berberine HCl
Studied for activating AMPK, an enzyme involved in how your cells manage energy. It works by a different route from the cinnamon, which is the reason it's in here.
What that adds up to
- Supports healthy blood sugar already within the normal range
- Supports everyday metabolic wellness
- One habit to keep: two capsules with a meal you were having anyway
What's in the bag, and what isn't
A proprietary blend is a legal way of not saying how little of each ingredient made it in. We'd rather print the numbers.

What the first three months look like
You take this every day for months, so the thing worth planning is the routine. We won't tell you how you'll feel and when. This exact formula hasn't itself been clinically tested, and everyone is different.
-
Week 1
Find the meal it belongs to
Breakfast or lunch, whichever you never skip. Leave the bag by the kettle so you see it. Don't expect fireworks this week. The job is the habit.
-
Month 1
The first bag runs out
Sixty capsules at two a day is exactly 30 days. If you chose a refill plan, the next bag is sent automatically, so there's no gap where the habit quietly lapses.
-
Month 3
The routine has had a fair run
The published research on cinnamon and berberine as ingredients generally covers several weeks of consistent daily use. Three months is also when the 90-day supply runs out, which is why it's the one we suggest starting with.
Matter Ceylon Cinnamon vs a typical cinnamon capsule
| Feature | Matter Ceylon Cinnamon | Typical cinnamon capsule |
|---|---|---|
| Cinnamon species | True Ceylon (Cinnamomum verum) | Often cassia, not always labelled |
| Coumarin | Ceylon carries far less than cassia | Cassia carries far more |
| Extract | Standardised to cinnamaldehyde & polyphenols | Ground powder, strength unknown |
| Second active | Berberine HCl, 500mg | Usually none |
| Doses | Both printed on the bag | Often inside a proprietary blend |
| Cost per day | From 40p on a refill plan | Varies |

Questions people ask before they order
Can I buy it in shops?
Not at the moment. Right now it's only available direct from Matter, here at getmatter.co.
What's actually in it?
Per two capsules: 1,000mg of Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) extract, standardised to cinnamaldehyde and polyphenols, and 500mg of berberine HCl. Both doses are printed on the bag. There's no proprietary blend.
I already have cinnamon on my porridge. Isn't that the same thing?
Probably not. Most kitchen cinnamon is cassia, a different bark that carries far more coumarin, and a shake from the jar is never measured. This is true Ceylon, standardised to its active compounds, in the same amount every day. Keep the porridge, though. It's still a good breakfast.
Can I take it alongside my medication?
Berberine is known to interact with some medications, including medicines for blood sugar and certain statins. If you take any prescription medication, especially for blood sugar or cholesterol, speak to your GP or pharmacist before you start.
Will it help my blood sugar?
Its job is to support healthy blood sugar already within the normal range and everyday metabolic wellness. It's a food supplement, not a medicine, so it isn't designed to fix a medical problem. If you're managing a diagnosed condition, your GP is the right person to talk to first.
How long before I notice anything?
Everyone's different, and this formula hasn't itself been clinically tested, so we won't put a number on it. The published research on cinnamon and berberine as ingredients generally covers several weeks of consistent daily use.
How do I take it?
Two capsules once a day with a meal, as printed on the label. Keeping the bag wherever you eat that meal makes it hard to forget.
How long does a bag last, and what does it cost a day?
Each bag holds 60 capsules, which is 30 days at two a day. On a refill plan that's from 40p a day on the 150-day supply, or about 44p a day on the 90-day supply. Refills can be cancelled any time.
Who are Matter?
A UK brand. We also make Daily Beets. The rule for everything we sell is the same: print every dose, skip the proprietary blends, and say plainly what the research does and doesn't show.
Is it suitable for everyone?
It's for adults. It isn't intended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or for under-18s. If you have a diagnosed health condition or take any medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
